Hollow blackduck by master carver Frank Finney of Cape Charles, Virginia in the style of the legendary carver Nathan Cobb.  Classic Cobb bulbous inlet head.  Bears the maker’s initial “F” including a carved and serifed reverse “N”.  Carved and painted to look old and the condition is excellent.  Checkout the Guyette and Schmidt Spring 2011 auction for a very similiar original at over $52,000.  Again, I handle primarily shorebirds but when a bird like this and the McNair Dudley Canvasback that was just sold come along I just have to change my ground rules a little.

Dodge Robin Snipe shorebird in the alert position with an Accomack Club, Virginia brand.  This shorebird is an important example of the species for the rare Dodge shorebirds.  The Accomack Club,  located on the Virginia eastern shore, was the most well known of the Virginia gunning clubs and was formed in 1887.  This Dodge snipe is from the mid to early 1890′s.  Square cut nail bill with very worn paint although some original paint remains.  Some roughness around the bill area indicative of a repair but overall in excellant structural condition.
